Cheney Admits Hussein Had No Ties To 9/11

In a rare move, ex-Vice President Dick Cheney admits that the old dictator of Iraq had no ties to 9/11.  He also admits that even though originally there was word out that Saddam had ties, they turned out to be untrue.

FDA approves Reclast (zoledronic acid) for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women

The FDA has approved the first therapy to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis for two years in a single dose. The FDA based its decision on a study done on 500 women with osteopenia (low bone mass), showing that a single infusion of this new treatment significantly increased the bone mineral density. A large number of women have osteopenia and if this treatment works, it will prevent even another problem for all aging individuals–osteoporosis.

Students Balk At Higher Fees

In a new way, students stand agaisnt rising athletic fees.  Students are protesting and voting against raising the fees for athletics so sports can continue at major universities.   So far three colleges in California have voted to not raise the fees in an economic situation that the state is in.  Currently the state is already raising fees for tuition and students can’t justify another increase.

Ethical In Unmoral Times

Harvard Business School has a voluntary oath that graduates can take and only twenty percent have signed on.  The oath is about being ethical in the era following the Enron and Worldcom collapses. The more interesting thing it seems is not the fact that the students are signing this, but that only twenty percent did sign it.

An Aspirin A Day Brings No Clear Benefits To Healthy People

A study at Oxford University which included 95,000 people as subjects suggests that there are no benefits in taking aspirin to prevent vascular diseases. If that isn’t enough, the study also suggests that the long term use of an aspirin for every day use has a significant increase in risk of gastrointestinal bleeds.

School System In California Failing

Boston To Adopt Similar Menu Requirements As New York

New York has required restaurant chains to post calories next to menu items for over a year now, and now Boston would like to follow them.  The article doesn’t go in depth about the results of people’s health after it went into effect, instead it just shows how people claim they sometimes change their order.  I guess according to one gentleman, the temptation is there.

AP/Miami Herald examines potential use of H1N1 vaccine

The article talks about the possible effect of the vaccine for the H1N1 (Swine) flu virus that can be developed and how it could be ineffective compared to the population getting earlier medical treatment. The concern here is that many uninsured people would delay getting treatment and may cause harm to themselves and others. Also there are several proposals about the government stepping in to make available free flu shots among other things.

Off-label uses of drugs should be approved for very ill patients, opinion piece states

In a piece inside the Wall Street Journal, Richard Epstein, a law professor at the University of Chicago writes that since the drug approval by the FDA is a slow process, there should a consideration to allow unapproved drugs to be available for sick patients, particularly those with cancer.

After a random sample of 973 Americans conducted by CBS/Ny Times , 62% of Americans still believe congress should not hold hearings to investigate the treatment of detainees.

Newton Mayor Seeks Raises For City Heads

Mayor Cohen of Newton, MA is seeking raises for city department heads as the economy is tanking in his community.  Under the proposal, he is not seeking a raise for himself as he withdrew that idea after an outcry.  What I found interesting is that he is trying to freeze the annual cost of living increase for regular city employees.

 

Do you think it is fair to raise salary’s for the bosses, while freezing the average Joe’s salary?

So Mayor Bloomberg who is running for reelection has out spent his opponent 7 to 1 during his reelection bid.  That is an astonishing number since he is using his personal fortune to outspend his competition which won’t have the same personal fortune as himself.
